Decision framework

Stewardship Principles

Principles govern choices across the Directory. They define the outcomes we pursue and the boundaries we will not cross to reach them.

Principles we affirm

The positive commitments used to shape a responsible decision.

Win / Win / Win for All Involved

Seek a complete good for present, absent, and future parties. Remove avoidable burdens; any unavoidable burden must be necessary, proportionate, disclosed, and minimized.

Does the Greatest Achievable Good

Pursue the best honest outcome across people and time while respecting individual dignity and rights.

Timeless, Not Merely of This Moment

Choose what can still be defended with equal moral clarity in one hundred years.

Open to All, Hidden from None

Make decisions, reasoning, limits, conflicts, and correction processes understandable by default.

A Precedent Passed Forward with Pride

Treat each decision as a gift or burden to the future; make the next right action easier and the next wrong action harder.

One Standard—No Inside and No Outside

Apply the same moral and procedural standard to allies, opponents, leaders, staff, and the public.

Individual Dignity in All Things

See, hear, and treat every affected person as a full, irreducible individual.

Accountability without Exception

Make responsibility traceable to named people; greater authority carries greater accountability, not greater exemption.

Boundaries we do not cross

Safeguards that remain in force even when pressure, urgency, or a desired outcome is strong.

No Avoidable Damage

Remove harm that can reasonably be prevented; minimize and openly account for any necessary burden.

No Concealed Tradeoffs

State who benefits, who bears cost, what is uncertain, and what alternatives were considered.

No Impure Motive

Do not let hidden self-interest, control, status, or retaliation drive a public-good claim.

No Righteous End Permits an Unrighteous Path

A desired outcome cannot excuse dishonest, degrading, coercive, or unjust means.

Do Not Answer Wrong with Wrong

Another person’s misconduct never lowers our own moral floor.

No Person Judged by Their Group

Use individual facts, individual process, and individual accountability.

No One Above the Standard

Office, popularity, expertise, urgency, and alliance create no exemption.

No Bending Foundational Principles

Apply principles consistently. Correct wording when Truth reveals an error, but never weaken a principle for convenience.

No Strategic Concealment of Truth

Do not hide material truth because disclosure is uncomfortable, costly, or inconvenient.
